Artist's Description

At Last we are seeing some colour changes to the leaves, not a lot, these are Sumac trees on my walk at Millmoor here in Dorset, but the larger ones are turning colour very slowly. Have to say the vibrant colour of these not very popular trees are very welcome!
Taken with Pentax Optio RS1000 Compact Camera

Sumac is the name of any of the small tree or shrub that belongs to the genus Rhus and the family Anacardiaceae. There are approximately 250 species of flowering plants that are known by the name sumac. They mainly grow in the subtropical and temperate regions of North America and Africa. Much known for its fall foliage, the sumac tree can serve a number of purposes besides being an ideal tree for landscaping. However, the popularity of the sumac tree is somewhat marred by the existence of some species, which can cause severe skin irritation and rash, if touched. Many people simply prefer to stay away from the sumac for this very reason. However, not all sumacs cause allergic reactions. There are several species or varieties of sumac trees, out of which the most common types are the staghorn sumac tree, poison sumac tree and smooth sumac tree.
