Artist's Description

“Come to the edge. We can’t. We’re afraid. Come to the edge. We can’t. We’ll fall! Come to the edge. And they came. And he pushed them. And they flew.” ~Guillaume Apollinaire

It kind of happened like that, I saw this snake, and wanted so badly to get a close up…but that fear, and not knowing if it was venomous…and then there I was in its face, until it turned to chase me and yes, indeed, I FLEW back to the car!

This species is known as the Northern Water snake , and is frequently called or mistaken for a cottonmouth (water moccasin); this latter species is a large venomous snake that does not occur within our state borders. This confusion is understandable as our water snake is certainly an aggressive species with a nasty disposition and it does bear a superficial resemblance to the cottonmouth. Info from the state website of New York, Photographed in the Bashakill Wetlands, Wurtsboro, New York, USA.
Though not venomous, it does wonders for the heart and nervous system! LOL!
