Artist's Description

“When we acknowledge the kingdom of the self, we will no longer accept slavery either for ourselves or for others, no matter how it is disguised.” ~Gerry L. Spence
Not all conductors gathered tickets from passengers upon trains running on iron tracks. Harriet Tubman was a conductor of the Underground Railroad, leading slaves by foot, or in wagons, from the south into freedom of the North. Harriet was the most famous of all conductors in history!

  • I once owned and lived in an old home along the canals here in the Catskills, where we discovered an old Underground passageway used by conductors of the Underground. The passageway led to the old train station in town where cubicles below the ground were available to hide the slaves until safety was found from authorities in pursuit.*
Inspired artworks by my interest in this facet of the local history and the many tunnels and hide-a-ways remaining in this area.
Digital painting of Harriet painted in Photoshop, stroked with a finger paint brush in Twisted Brush. Brought back into Photoshop, combined with two photographic images layered in, and three textures layered in. All layers adjusted for color, effect, and opacity. Image flattened an and saved for presentation. Textures courtesy of Shadow House Creations
