Artist's Description

Tea was introduced to Sri Lanka after its coffee plantations were destroyed by disease in the 19th century. Today, Sri Lanka is the world’s third largest producer of tea.

Traditionally it is Tamil women who harvest tea. They spend hours wading their way through the velvet like tea bushes, delicately plucking the first two leaves and buds of each stem. Carrying the heavy baskets filled with leaves back to the factory is hard work and is made even more difficult when the occasional Sri Lankan cobra makes an appearance from beneath the bushes.
