Witness

Red and blue lights flashed over the night-time scene. The harsh wind tugged at my coat and face. The motions of people before me were brisk and hollow, reflecting their hopelessness.

Shrill screams pierced the ears of spectators, and the woman collapsed in a pile of sobs as her son was carried away. The crumbling remains of their station wagon folded under the weight of the truck.

A siren was heard in the background, approaching loudly. The young police officer released one of the woman’s hands to signal the ambulance. Medics leapt down immediately and set to work.

The firemen’s groans of effort were followed by a satisfying crack, as the bashed truck door was wrenched free. The driver jumped down from the wreck. His arm was bleeding slightly, and a bottle fell from his lap. He swayed as he walked, eyes seemingly out of focus.

He was drunk.

Artist's Description

My first piece of Flash Fiction in a really long time, so excuse me for being rusty. I’m trying to get back in the game.

This was inspired by the “Witness” prompt on one of the monthly competitions (I know that it’s over.)

Constructive feedback is requested and welcomed.
