Today I changed the brakes on my truck.
The rear brakes!
In my driveway!
In the sun!
It’s like 90+ degrees.
HOT!!!!
So now it is about one in the afternoon and I’ve finished the truck and I’m sitting by my small fish pond in my back yard enjoying a cold beer.
Sweating!!!!
The pond sets under a couple of red maple shade trees and I have a bench and chair on a small deck next to the pond. A small waterfall at the far end of the pond provides the sound of water falling onto rocks.
So small! So quiet! So peaceful!!!!
DAMN! Almost feel asleep! Sorry!!!!
As I sit by the water of my small fish pond listening to the small waterfall I contemplated. Yes I contemplated! I contemplated about many things. One of the things I contemplated was Delaware.
The weather in Delaware!!!!
Delaware is the state I reside in and today as I contemplate while sitting next to my small fish pond in my back yard I was thinking about the weather in Delaware. It’s hot 90+ degrees but 6 months ago it was cold. Cold right here where I’m sitting now, sweating. Cold enough to make ice and it did make ice. My small fish pond was iced in.
The weather here in Delaware goes from really, really hot to really, really cold in a matter of a few months but the fish in my small fish pond seem not to mind these crazy swings in temperature. As for us (humans), we need a wardrobe for each of the four seasons we have in Delaware, hot, cooling down, cold and warming up, also known as Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring.
It’s so hot! My beer is cold! My eyes are so heavy and blurry from sweat that has seeped into them as I replaced my brakes. Nothing is in focus and I feel as though I am drifting, floating away. It is no longer hot. The temperature is perfect. I’m no longer sweating.
“Harold, Harold wake up it stopped snowing. You told me to call you when the snow stopped” the voice said. It was Dianne calling to wake me!
Time to go to work!
The first snow fall of the season had arrived and there was about 6” of it that now had to be cleared from the sidewalks and driveway. I was dressed in my usual red shorts. I have at least a dozen pairs of shorts but the red ones are my favorite. My everyday attire, so to speak! So off I go to find my boots then to the shed for my snow shovel. I always wear boots for snow removal as to not track snow back into the house.
The snow had stopped and the clouds had turned into big white fluffy patches slowly skipping across a pale blue sky. All in all a beautiful day to be outdoors, even if it meant being outdoors just to work. It took me a little over an hour to finish the job and I was feeling good in my red shorts and snow removal boots, not in any hurry to go back indoors that’s for sure. So, as I put my snow shovel back in the shed I decided to lay out in the back yard and catch a few rays. Still in my shorts and snow removal boot I found the perfect spot to lay on my back and watch the clouds float across the pastel blue sky. The snow made a most comfortable mattress as I lay there in perfect harmony with nature. I laced my fingers behind my head and watched for clouds that might be shaped like everyday objects that I might recognize.
So quiet! So peaceful!!!!
“Harold, Harold wake up I thought you were going to cut the grass” It was Dianne calling me.
What the, what’s going on, my mind is wondering as I come out of a deep sleep, I’m laying on my back in the grass and the grass is green and there is no snow. I’m wearing my red short but now I do not have my snow removal boots on. As my mind clears I remember that I had come out to cut the grass. It was Summer once again. Summer always meant edging the sidewalks, trimming the bushes along with cutting the grass.
Summer also meant HOT!
It’s 90+ degrees and I’m headed to the shed to fire up my mower and cut grass. My yard is not very large so it only takes about 40 minutes to mow it if I don’t have to do the edging and trimming. As I finish mowing I’m thinking about a cold beer and sitting by my small pond as I enjoy it. I have on my red shorts and flip-flops it is 90+ degrees and I just finished mowing the lawn in the bright sunshine but I am not sweating. The air temperature maybe 90+ degrees but it feels perfect against my skin. I push the mower into the shed and head to the kitchen to grab a beer from the frig. Then out to my small fish pond in my back yard to enjoy it.
With my cold beer in hand I sat on the bench that is on the small deck that is next to my small fish pond. As I sip my beer I can hear the water hitting the rocks as it falls from the small waterfall.
So small! So quiet! So peaceful!!!!
“Well how long do you plan to sleeping out here” she said with a smile. It was Dianne and she stood in front me laughing.
As the fog cleared and my eyes began to focus I found myself sitting in my work coveralls on the bench on the small deck next to my small fish pond, an empty beer bottle next to me and I was sweating. Sweating in my greasy work coveralls. I had just finished changing the brakes on my truck.
The back brakes!
And it is hot!
90+ degrees!
And I am sweating!!!!
