This image is the product of a recent backyard photo expedition I took with my dear friend, PENNY GAY. I dedicate this photo to her. Sorry for wiping the photos off your camera, Penny. My bad!
I can’t help but love the strong lines of these corrugated iron roofs (aka tin roofs) contrasted against the dark shadows and yellow weatherboards. Hopefully they combine well to form an unusual, everyday urban abstract.
Seen on many buildings throughout Australia, the tin roof is as iconic as (in this case) many of the wooden structures that it covers. In the state of Queensland there are wooden houses called ‘Queenslanders’, and in my opinion they are an endangered species. These homes with all their beauty and simple charm are slowly being lost, only to be replaced by high-density apartment blocks, town houses or bland, ultra-modern homes that are sterile and characterless. I think this is what they call ‘urban renewal’ and the developers have gone mad, thanks largely to a greedy state government and inept local councils. Looking for easy sollutions and quick profits, these people have no more soul than the ugly places they build. Give me a tin roof and an old Queenslander any day!
As far as this photo is concerned, apart from blotting out a blue sky in order to give greater balance and contrast, I haven’t done that much to the image at all. Some gentle sharpening, contrast adjustments and re-lighting, some polarizing, and that’s about it. This photo was taken from my verandah in Brisbane, Australia.
PS: When I went to school the plural of roof was ROOVES. I do my best to keep up with current trends but can’t help wonder what is happening to the English Language. hmmmm
Photo taken with Canon IXUS 80 IS and edited with Lightzone. SIMPLICITY is my niche!
Urban abstract: an earlier attempt at something a bit different. My objective here was to capture some of the rustic charm of this house and the roof lines seemed to accommodate that.
One of my very first editing efforts. I wanted to create something abstract and these corrugated roofs seemed to fit the bill quite nicely. I still love the naive simplicity of this image.
Original Image: Pretty boring, eh?
