Artist's Description

The photos in this flood collection have not been posted for their artistic merit; far from it, although this is probably one of the few exceptions. They are simply my personal account of the Brisbane Floods 2011 and how it has impacted my life. All photos have been taken in my local neighbourhood no more than 500 metres from my home. I hope you find them interesting and informative.

Here’s a little bit of abstract art courtesy of the Brisbane River. This is mud drying on the hood of my mate’s blue Toyota Corolla which was inundated by flood waters. It’s Clean-Up day and the first day we’ve had some extended periods of sunshine for quite some time. The mud dries quickly when exposed to the sun and fresh air, turning it from a sticky sludge into hard-baked clay. As it dries it peals away from the car’s duco, and the lines that appear between the flakes is simply the residue left behind. That’s why there are two distinct shades, and I’ve chosen the golden hues simply because the late afternoon sun was low in the sky and everything was bathed in a soft, warm glow.

I like the abstract look of the original photo but it seems very flat to me. That’s why I’ve rotated it and tried to give it some depth, hopefully creating a 3D effect. I’m sure there are programs that can do this in a flash, but it’s a little more complicated using Lightzone. All that aside, this image looks like potato chips and chocolate to me… yum yum yum :D

Did you notice the camera strap to the left of the photo? I kind of like it because it gives the image a sense of everyday reality. Regardless, it blends in nicely and isn’t overly obvious.

Photo taken with Canon IXUS 80 IS and edited with Lightzone. SIMPLICITY is my niche!

Notice the mud on the hood. The flood did little to clean this car. Next time we’ll use the hose!
