Artist's Description

Remember, friends, as you pass by,
As you are now, so once was I,
As I am now, so you must be,
Prepare yourself to follow me.
(From a headstone in Ashby, Massachusetts)

Each grave, each headstone, each plaque, and each flower posy represents a life that has since passed, a memorial to those that have lived. They may have physically departed, but their spirit lives on in the hearts and minds of those that survive them. For us to live full and happy lifes is to honour that part our friends have played in it, and the grief we feel is a measure of the love we hold for them. (N.A.Ross – original)

Grief is a very emotional experience, and it’s a lonely one not easily shared. It is however, an integral part of the healing process. It helps us come to terms with our loss. If we don’t grieve, then we have lost nothing. The following passage has always brought me great comfort in times of grief and sorrow. It still brings a tear to my eyes, but also fills my heart with love and hope knowing that my departed friends are now in God’s loving care, and that I will see them again one day soon.

What is Dying?
A ship sails and I stand watching ’til she fades on the horizon, and someone at my side says “she is gone.” Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all. She is just as large as when I saw her; the diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says “she is gone”, there are others who are watching her coming, and other voices take up the glad shout, “here she comes!”
And that is dying. (Bishop Brent)

When it’s my turn to shed this mortal coil, for God’s sake, scatter my ashes to the wind, cast them into the ocean, or plant a tree as a memorial to me – a giant Eucalyptus, a Moreton Bay Fig, or a mighty Oak or Beech… somewhere out in the bush (or under someone’s house as a parting joke). I will have done my time on this earthly plane, so to cast my ashes in this fashion is symbolic of freedom of spirit. That’s my wish.
