Artist's Description

This village was built under the overhang of a cliff
by the Ancient Indians over 1,000 years ago in the Mesa Verde National Park. There is at least another 150 feet more buildings behind the structures pictured. The builders had to carry rocks up to the site and break them up to make bricks and then used mud and a type of plaster to hold it all together.
The round parts (kivas) of the ruins were used as either lookouts or for religious ceremonies. This is one of the better preserved villages and is maintained by rangers to keep it from falling into further disrepair.
