Manhattan's Last Midnight - Poem Version

Manhattan
slinks into nightfall’s inky dress
light the last candle
the cage-like balcony
glowing glowing…flickerflicker
like fireflies
serenading the stars
suspended
in the purple tinted sky above
throngs of New Yorkers
shift throughout the sidewalks
sky breaks into a sob
silver-lined clouds shed
diamond rain
neon signs and street lamps become bokeh
he joins me, eclipsing the nightlife
takes my hand for a dance to a
Chopin nocturne
meet his eyes
see the distrust
reflected from mine.
balance in shiny black stilettos
dress twirls in symphony with the
music but tonight
it feels like hundreds of
chains dragging me into
the next note
rain melts into the glassy
sidewalks
shades of the stars blend
with the coldness of concrete
lace gloved fingers
twined with his but feel
more like they are handcuffed
sumer’s last night seeps
into autumn’s first morning
one candle left still aflame
still we dance,
my hands still cuffed,
tighter than before,
in the stone of his hands as the
morning bleeds another crimson sunrise.

Picture perfect for a fractured frame.
