Manhattan's Last Midnight

As Manhattan slinks into nightfall’s inky dress I light the last candle. The cage-like balcony now glowed and flickered like fireflies, serenading the stars suspended in the purple tinted sky above. Looking out below, I see throngs of New Yorkers shift throughout the sidewalks, each for a different purpose. The sky breaks into a sob and silver-lined clouds shed a layer of diamond rain. Neon signs and street lamps become bokeh as he joins me, eclipsing the nightlife. He takes my hand for a dance to a Chopin nocturne and as I meet his eyes I see the distrust reflected from mine.
My knees shake as I balance in shiny black stilettos. My black dress twirls in symphony with the music but tonight it feels like hundreds of chains dragging me into the next note. More rain melts into the glassy sidewalks and the shades of the stars blend with the coldness of concrete. My lace gloved fingers are twined with his but feel more like they are handcuffed.
Summer’s last night seeps into autumn’s first morning with one candle left still aflame. Birds are drowned out by the buzz of New York gridlock and still we dance, my hands still cuffed, tighter than before, in the stone of his hands as the morning bleeds another crimson sunrise. Picture perfect for a fractured frame.

Artist's Description

annnnnd the english assignments are back. i’m thinking of making a challenge based on these. they’re called ‘telling sentences’ where the title (this one was supposed to be They Were an Unusual Bunch) tells what happens but in the writing you have to specifically show the scene in about a page, trying to fit in as much emotion and imagery in as you can and avoiding dead verbs (was, is, said, went). Writing cant be submitted into challenges though, so i’d have to have people bubblemail me their entries and then have them bubblemail me their votes so i could post the winner and it would still be anonymously voted upon. would people like that?

hope you enjoy. hope my teacher enjoys and gives me a good grade :)
