Still Here...

I sat on the green carpet, my back leaning against the windowed wall. Alone, I thought about yesterday. I thought about tears. I thought about rain. About knives. James walks by in his signature neon orange jacket. I said hi. No response. Typical. I thought some more…James walks back and sits down next to me. He makes weird noises and faces that have some freak power to bring me back to second grade and I crack up. He checks his phone, texts someone, and I take his phone. He asks me what I’m doing repeatedly but I don’t respond. I scroll through his pictures and he shows me his dirtbike, friends, a stupid poster. I ask what time it is. 12:28. Class starts in two minutes. I tell him I’m leaving for class, but tell him something else first. He smirks, and I keep talking.
“You know what’s funny?” he asks.
“What?”
“You’re still here.”
“…Yeah, anyways the Yearbook is due Monday so Becker is freaking out…”
“You know what’s funny?”
“…And then I have science finals on Wednesday and I haven’t studied yet…”
“You know what’s funny?”
“What?”
“You’re still here.”
“Yeah, anyways, I’m going to class.”
“You know what’s funny?”
“I’m still here. I’m going to class.”
“You know what’s funny? You’re still here.”

You know what’s funny? For the last three months I’ve been telling myself I’m forgetting it, I’m leaving it behind.

But I’m still here.
