Artist's Description

Big Beach, on the island of Maui, Hawaii, USA, is a wonderful place to relax, bask in the sun, and enjoy the Pacific. A bit difficult to get to and unlike some of the other beaches on the Hawaiian islands, it is not crowded. A perfect place for a leisurely weekend afternoon. Looking southwest, one can see the island of Kaho’olawe, the smallest of the eight main Hawaiian islands. During World War II, the island was used as a training ground by the U.S. Armed Forces. Live-fire training exercises by the US Navy were ended in 1990, after decades of protest, and in 1994 jurisdiction of the island was transferred to the state of Hawaii. Today, only native Hawaiians can use the island for cultural, spiritual, and subsistence purposes. It provides an important symbol of the resilience of the human nature in the face of great adversity.
