Location: Rathmines, Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia
Event: 6th Annual Catalina Festival
Rathmines on the shore of Lake Macquarie, south of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia was the location of a Royal Australian Air Force flying boat base during the Second World War.
The photo shows the Catalina amphibian floatplane of the Historic Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) on final approach for its first water landing on Lake Macquarie. After alighting it taxied up the concrete ramp to the old air base location for public display. This Catalina is normally based at Albion Park Airport – location of the HARS air museum.
Photo taken using a Nikon D90 camera fitted with a Sigma EX 50-500mm 1:4-6.3 APO DG HSM zoom lens.
The photo was tweaked using Gimp software – brightness/contrast tool and sharpening filter.
