The famous steam engine "The Flying Scotsman" visited Australia in 1989 to conduct several rail tours. In this shot "The Flying Scotsman" is coupled with the Australian steam engine 3801 on a journey from Sydney, New South Wales across the width of Australia to Perth, Western Australia.
It ran under the name of "The West Australian" (the normal rail service between Sydney and Perth is the diesel-powered "Indian-Pacific".
This shot was taken in the western suburbs between Parramatta and Westmead stations when the trip was outbound from Sydney. The time was 8.45am and the date: 9 September 1989.
The photo was taken with an Asahi Pentax SPII camera using Kodak colour transparency film.
The photo has been tweaked using Gimp software - select/copy/paste tools to remove some imperfections and brightness/contrast tool and sharpening filter.
