This is the Chateau in the centre of the town of Blois in the valley of the Loire River in central France.
I visited this town in 2012 as part of the retracing of the route of my father’s escape from Nazi imprisonment during the Second World War.
He was an Australian Merchant Navy marine engineer. His ship, TSS Maimoa, was sunk by the German Navy Q-ship Pinguin in the Indian Ocean and he was captured and transported to Bordeaux in France. After a period of incarceration there he was sent by train with other captured sailor to go to a prison camp somewhere in Germany.
As the train was passing through Blois, he and three others (another Australian from his ship plus 2 Englishmen from another two ships) jumped from it and made their way south (with help from locals) to Marseilles and then across into Spain where they were again imprisoned before eventually being released.
The photo was taken with a Nikon D70 camera fitted with a Tamrom AF Aspherical LD DiII SP 11-18mm 1:4.5-5.6 [IF] zoom lens plus polarizing filter.
The photo was tweaked using Gimp software – brightness/contrast tool and sharpening filter.
