To fetch the Crown

Our blokes came from miles around
drawn to the cities of gold to take the kings beckoning crown
stockman & drovers citymen too
volunteers all to join the big bloody blue
give em a slouch hat & baggy khaki
a shooter, some dixies & Battalion ID
cuss em & curse em & drive em in ranks
get em to the range & shoot em some planks
strip em & ship em down to the quayside
wave off loved ones with a she’ll be right
dinky bloody di
over the ocean far across the Sea
to far distant lands up way beyond to buggery
train em & brain em with military regularity
but they’d rather two up & brew up with bluey & freddy ya see
all the young & hardened oldies all off to Gallipoli

Well, the turk, for his motherland, he sure fights bold
the casualty lists a plenty in the hometown papers did hold
the names of those blokes that the reaper had bowled
at Gallipoli where the lads clung for 8 months all told
more than one cursing the crown for their soul they had sold
in that far away enticing bloody city of gold

To fetch the Crown

Artist's Description

Written when Alec Campbell died in 2002. He was our last Anzac, and so i wrote through the night about what they all had achieved and the legacy they left, now that the last of them had departed these shores, to take his rightful place up there in the battalions in the sky.
