Dying to Live (cont.)

Jake knew so many people at the party. He didn’t feel like being around any of them. The party was being thrown by a guy whose parents were out of town for the weekend. He sat on the porch with a red plastic cup from the keg, he had a full pack of smokes and was perfectly content to sit alone listening to the sounds that escaped the house from the party.

That was before the door had opened and Mary joined him. It turned out that Mary was the sister of the guy throwing the party, she lived here as well. So they sat together, the darkness closed around them. The windows in the houses across the street were all dark, the people who lived in them had turned the lights out long ago. An orange street lamp on the corner that flashed on and off and the occasional headlights of a passing car were the only things that broke the night.
She sat on the top step with her elbow on her knee. She seemed sad to him, not that she was crying or even frowning, but he could sense something dark churning beneath her skin. He wondered how someone so beautiful could have something so ugly lurking just beneath the surface.
Voices in the house grew louder, something fell over with a loud crash.
“What are they doing to my house?” She wondered.
“It sounds like they’re playing catch with the couch”, he answered.
“I should go in and see.”
“And I should probably go find my girlfriend.”
“Why? Do you miss her?”
“Not really”, he answered truthfully.
“So go.”
“You first.”
Neither of them moved. He took a long drink from the cup in his hand. It blurred his vision just a little more.
