Artist's Description

I’ve always thought of pelicans as sea or shore birds, so when canoeing through the Missouri Breaks in north central Montana I came across a flock of white pelicans, I asked “How did you get here?”

The American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) breeds in inland North America and migrates south and to the coast in the winter. Breeding grounds are found as far north as the Slave River in Alberta and the Northwest Territories of Canada. 10-20% of the species nest on islands in the Great Salt Lake of Utah. Unlike the Brown Pelican, these birds do not dive for their dinner, but catch fish while swimming. They will even feed in flocks, driving fish toward each other.

Taken 4/24/2011 at Freezeout Lake NWR, Teton County, Montana.

Nikon D80 DSLR, Sigma 400 mm telephoto lens.

ISO 125, f /16.0, 1/350 second, finished in Photoshop CS4.
