Artist's Description

Built in 1876, the Madison County Court House is the oldest courthouse in the state of Montana still serving its original purpose. Madison County, one of Montana’s original 9 counties, is located in southwestern Montana, just west of Yellowstone National Park. Virginia City, the county seat, is the smallest Montana county seat as there are only 130 full-time residents in town. Come Summer, however, watch out. This restored ghost town comes to life with live melodrama in the Opera House, topical/political cabaret in the Brewery and gunslingers shooting it out on Main Street.

Montana’s political history is tied to mining, and a gold strike in this area made Virginia City the largest community in the inland northwest in 1864, when over 10,000 people moved to the area. Virginia City served as Montana’s second territorial capital from 1865 to 1875.

Madison County is number 25 on Montana license plates.

Taken 2/14/2010 in Virginia City, Montana.

Nikon D80 DSLR, Nikkor 16-85 mm wide angle/tele/zoom lens set at 16 mm.

ISO 125, f /19.0, 1/45 second.
