Artist's Description

The Mount Olive United Methodist Church was first built in 1855. It stands on a hill just outside of the town of Jarvisville, West Virginia. It was originally a United Brethren Church, the denomination of my grandparents, great-grandparents, and who knows how far back. In 1946, the United Brethren merged with the Evangelical Association to become the Evangelical United Brethren, and in 1968 another merger, this time with The Methodist Church, created the United Methodist Church.

My father, born and bred in West Virginia, attended seminary at Boston University fully intending to return to the West Virginia hills. Instead he was lured to Montana by a District Superintendent who told him “In West Virginia, there’s a Methodist Church on every street corner.” Jarvisville was one of the churches my father served when he was in college, but he didn’t serve this one. He served the one down the road a piece.

Taken in Jarvisville, West Virginia using a Nikon D80 DSLR fitted with a Sigma 18-50 mm tele/zoom lens. ISO 200, f /9.5, 1/350 second.
