If you had wings

If you lived on the ground
And believed that the sky
And the clouds
And the sun
And the stars
Were just the beauty of dreams
You would walk with your head down
Believing that dreams lived above you

But if you’d had wings
If you’d flown free through the sky
And been kissed by the clouds
For flying among them
As you embraced them
For inspiring your reach

If you’d flown to the sun
That mirrored the one
That burned
with such implacable pain inside you
And sent scalding rays
And stunning beams
Searing through you
As you soared through them
And made you of light

Could you then walk on the ground
Where the weight of your legs
Reminds you with every step
Of the wings you had
Of the clouds you had loved
Of how like light you had been

Could you then live on the ground
Where your still unbowed head
Reminds you
with every burning glance
That the sky
And the clouds
And the sun
And the stars
Aren’t ethereal
Nor dreams
But miles of weight
Miles of weight
Crushing you
Mocking you
Reminding you
Without forgiveness
Without forgiveness

If you had wings
