Artist's Description

The kid hasn’t quite got it right, but he’s learning!

That’s not his mama. That’s his aunt. We know this because we adopted Princess first and she was fixed long before the kitten ever came around. Both were barn-cats initially, and lived out back. We don’t even know which one was the mama was. Four have made it to the “Big House” now… one other kitten, probably a litter-mate of this one, and their “uncle” Roscoe older than the kittens by about 6 months.
It’s interesting to watch them inter-act. They seem to know their own relations from the “Outsider Cats” (those we had before they moved here, who were not among the barn-cat crew). The four hang out together and ignore the rest, wherever possible. The “aunts and uncles” fill in for the mother cat. No one’s nursing anyone (they’re weaned); but Roscoe and Princess both groom and bathe the little ones as though they were their own. Some may debate it, but they even taught them how to use the litterbox! The kittens are a real hand-ful. Well, they’re quiet when they’re sleeping. Otherwise, they’re a two-cat Demolition Team. The auntie, in particular, puts up with all that rowdiness although I’m not so sure she likes the “love bites” much. She swats him if he bites too hard and that’s the end of it. Then he either settles down and goes to sleep, or starts a wrestling match with Roscoe or his litter-mate and lets her snooze in peace.
What they say of kids is also true of kittens. If only we could bottle up that energy and sell it, we’d be millionaires! :-)
