Monarch on a lily in my garden
(Danaus plexippus)

Not a real lily! It’s a garden light

I didn’t think he’d go for this! Well, it didn’t take long before he figured out the flower was a fake.

The eastern North American monarch population is notable for its annual southward late-summer/autumn migration from the United States and southern Canada to Mexico. During the fall migration, monarchs cover thousands of miles, with a corresponding multi-generational return north.

=====
Although larvae eat only milkweed, adult monarchs feed on the nectar of many plants including asters, thistles, wild carrot, teasel, coneflowers, horseweed, dame’s rocket, blazing stars, alfalfa, lilacs and goldenrod.

No plastic lilies!

Due largely to the scarcity of milkweed in contemporary times, the Center for Biological Diversity and the Center for Food Safety filed a legal petition requesting Endangered Species Act protection for the monarch and its habitat. The species IS on the decline: so don’t root out the milkweed, if you’ve got some by your fence or out along your road! It’s vital to survival for the Monarchs.
