FEATURED in PRESERVING HISTORY ~ MIDWESTERN US PHOTOGRAPHY

The history of the American Quilt Barn dates back nearly nearly 300 years to the first arrival of immigrants from the central regions of Europe; Germany, Austria and the Netherlands.

It is believed that barn quilting originated in Pennsylvania and then spread to much of New England and the Heartland of America. Painting a distinctive quilt pattern on the barn was a wonderful way of decorating. It also became away for visitors to find particular families or cross roads. Towns people would just tell travelers which patterns to look for.

Quilt barns fell out of fashion for nearly a century, but today they’ve become popular again especially in New England and the Midwest, with more and more becoming visible.
