Love?

I have a reputation for flings.
I’m trying to be someone else.
To find the place where I belong
Without feeling anxious and tense.

I need to find a place I can leave.
That’s why one night stands are easy,
Or long distance lusty couplings
Which leave me smiling, not queasy.

I’ve forsaken the idea of love,
Both its sense of promise and pain.
Songs and poetry cover love
And form a basis for my disdain:

Love lies bleeding
Love is the drug
Love is as a fever
Love is a battlefield
Love equals death.

Love?

Artist's Description

I hadn’t heard the Alannah Myles song Love is for many years, so when I did recently I started wondering how a non-romantic like myself could possibly subvert all the love songs and poems into something more real for myself. I actually have a lot of time for the concept of love as a whole, but especially in romantic pursuits, often feel we’re conditioned to focus too much on the positives, rather than all the little sad things that come about through human interaction. Figure it might elicit discussion/debate anyways and I love that!

Please find below links to the lyrics or poems referenced in the final stanza:
Love lies bleeding (Elton John)
Love is the drug (Roxy Music)
Love is as a fever (William Shakespeare, Sonnet 147)
Love is a battlefield (Pat Benatar)
And in case you’re wondering – Love equals death is a band not a song :)
