The phases of the moon are superimposed against the same background, giving the impression the moon phases are rising as one. Trees in the foreground provide a slight reference point / contrast to the night sky.

The photo of the moon was taken with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel. Aperture was used to enhance it. Photoshop was used to create the “sliced” phases from the greater whole and place them accordingly against the night sky.
