Artist's Description

It has become tradition for Sinterklaas to visit the Abel Tasman Retirement Village. (When the Dutch settled in New Amsterdam, later to become New York, they brought the tradition of Sinterklaas, with them. New Amsterdam became New York and Sinterklaas became Santa Claus.)

It has also become tradition for the residents and invited children to be entertained by some magic tricks, performed by Mr Sjoerd Rasker, as the warm-up act before the arrival of the good saint Nicholas and his helpers, the Black Peters.

Dutch-born residents of the village will well remember, how, when they were little, in the Netherlands, they’d listen out for the sound of the saint’s white stallion riding across the roof tops and hope to catch his helpers, coming down the chimneys (If they had them.) to hopefully leave presents, and take away any carrots or other gifts from the children, for the good saint and his horse.
