Artist's Description

At the Manly Art Gallery and Museum, yesterday, Tuesday 23 September, Thea Bourne was one of four artists, speaking about their work.

I am pleased that Thea invited me to attend.

We are both from the Netherlands. Both born there, during World War II. Both arrived in Australia, in the mid-fifties, although via very different experiences.

Thea grew up in Indonesia. Has studied art, since 1986, completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons), UNSW.

Last night’s talks were particularly interesting because of diverse approaches to art, revealed by the four artists.

Nathalie Hartog-Gautier’s work with water colour, graphite drawing and paper.
Alan Waite’s enthusiasm for painting “en plein Air”.
Mike Sargeant, who turned a hobby into an obsession, using as his mterials, anything that has come to the end of its life. (Most items coming from scrap yards, op shops, recycling co-operatives and friends of his.)

And Thea Bourne’s work, consisting mainly of large, sculptural, charcoal drawings, based on shell fragments from an Aboriginal midden.
