The brilliant Christian name of Joseph has comparable meanings in each and every one of the different languages in which is used. The name Joseph is pronounced JO-sef in English, zho-ZEF in French and YO-zef in German. The name simply means that “God will increase.” The name Joseph actually comes from the Latin word losephus that comes from the Greek losephos which in turn comes from the Hebrew Yosef that means, “He will add”.

Biblically speaking Joseph was one of the most loved children of Jacob. Joseph was the favorite of his father which caused his older brothers to send him away to Egypt to get rid of him out of pure jealousy. Who wouldn’t be jealous of a man who has a destiny of being increased by his own maker? The brothers told their father that Joseph had died. Egypt Joseph took on the meaning of his name, as he became a top advisor to the pharaoh. Eventually Joseph reconciled with his brothers during the famine but had a little pay back in mind before doing so. Although Joseph was placed in prison left for dead by his brothers he over came all this adversity and increased his own living standards and lived to the ripe old age of 110. Even at his old age the people for whom he served still regarded him well as it is shown in several papyri that the Egyptians thought that his age of death was one of the most perfect ages to live to.

Joseph is also the name of the husband of Mary mother of Jesus Christ. As time has past Joseph had become a very popular name and still is today there were famous rulers with this name such as Joseph Stalin and Joseph of Arimathea. More recently the name Joseph continues to be on the rise as the 1990 census reports that it is one of the most popular names of the decade. In today’s society the name of Joseph is still continuously on the rise as its meaning is “God will increase” many parents believe that by naming their child this; that their child will have a fruitful life with lots of prosperity with in a lot of ways is true.

The meaning of this name alone is reason enough for a large amount of parents to pick this name sometimes even before birth because of its religious and historical significance. People have a tendency to want to name their offspring after themselves and sometimes after someone or something famous. In the new millennium children have been named after plants animals and even vehicles.

The fact is that Joseph is probably one of if not the most popular and greatest name a parent could give to a new born child. The truth in the meaning of this name can be most easily explained in the life of Joseph the son of Jacob. Not only did “God increase” but God gave Joseph the ability to decipher a man’s dreams. More importantly the dreams of the man who had control of his life or death god increased Joseph’s understanding his social stature as well as his financial placement among the people of a foreign land.
