Artist's Description

This is another of my works on ceramic tiles, it is acrylic water colors covered with clear lacquer. A little easier that drawing with pen & ink on tiles.
the title is very typical Australian. for those not in Australia and indeed for a lot of my fellow Aussies particularly newies its meaning is as follows:
“Swaggie or Swagman” is Australia’s equivalent of America’s hobo, or in the UK or
Europe the nearest comparison is probably the Gypsies. The name comes from
the “swag” that he carries which is basically his bedroll and belongings.
“on the wallaby” means that he is on the trail or track, on the wander like wallabies.
(small Kangaroos) in search if food. he seeks out homesteads looking for a handout
and almost always arrives on sundown so he can get a feed without having to work
for it. In the morning he’s gone before the station boss can give him a job.
this is why he is also referred to as a “sundowner”
His breed has almost died out in modern times but during the depression and after he was a common site in outback Australia and has become part of our folklore.
