Roseberry Manor

As Malinda stepped onto the gangplank to leave the ship, she looked around. Damn! There wasn’t a taxi available. They were all loaded down with other passengers. She would have to take it on foot for a while. She picked up her bags, and began to walk. If only she hadn’t been daydreaming of the life ahead. She would have heard the first call to deboard. She stopped at the Harbor Master’s office to ask directions to Roseberry Manor.

“Roseberry Manor?!?” The Harbor Master looked both surprised and scared at the request. “Why would a lovely lady such as yourself be looking for that horrid place?” Malinda took a look of despair and asked “Is it all that bad? What is wrong with the place?” The man looked her in the eye as he told her about the goings on there in recent years. “That poor old woman, some say she died of fright in her own home. But the Lady Roseberry always insisted that the house weren’t haunted. ‘It just has a lively spirit about it,’ is what she said. Personally, I believe it all to be made up by that old caretaker of hers. He never let anyone close to the place”

“Lady Roseberry?” asked Malinda. “Mother never told me she had a title. Is that all? Haunted doesn’t sound too bad. But tell me more of this caretaker.”

“Some say that he was in love with the old woman. Others think that he is after the fortune believed to be hidden somewhere within the walls of the manor. Now I cannot tell you anymore. Be gone with ya so I can get my work done.”

And with that, Malinda set out to find her new home.
