TRUE CHRISTMAS

Ginger and cinnamon,
Vanilla and clove,
Scents promising delicacies
Drift from the stove.

The tree in the parlor
Is winking at me,
Its decorative branches
Bow down gracefully.

The presents are wrapped,
Stacked in mountainous height,
Catching each passer’s eye
Can we wait out the night?

The mantle is dressed
With holiday gleam.
The children sing carols
While grandparents dream.

But the real beauty here
Isn’t cookies or pies,
Or the gifts or the songs,
Or trees in disguise.

There’s a feeling abroad
Of love and goodwill.
Our cup runneth over,
Each heart drinks its fill.
