Artist's Description

This is a juvenile male Common Whitetail dragonfly. When mature, the abdomen takes on a blueish hue. They typically perch with wings outspread and like being low to the ground. They are wary but not terribly hard to approach if you move slowly.

These are, indeed, common dragonflies. Their range covers the lower 48 states, come of Mexico and Canada. They like being near bodies of water, but ours are at least a quarter mile away from a pond. Although they can be found flying at almost any time, our locale sees them most frequently from May through July.

This photograph was taken June 21, 2009, in Green Lane, PA.

Dragonflies are fast agile fliers hunting other flying insects on the wing. Welcome them into your yard!
