Artist's Description

This is an old, wooden fishing lure of the vintage era; people call them antique, but this is not technically correct. Atom was a favorite plug for striper fishermen – good, too, for bluefish and probably other predatory game fish. When fisherman came to Bob Pond’s trailer in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts to buy more of his lures, they commented to the effect that these must be “Atom Bombs” because of how many fish they caught. Thus the name, Atom.

The Atom Manufacturing Company was begun by Bob Pond in 1945 in Attleboro, Massachusetts. Massachusetts and Rhode Island were hot spots for sport fishing. It was in 1998 that Mr. Pond finally sold his company, and Atom Lures are still manufactured to this day, but in plastic.

The old, wooden lures were replaced with plastic around 1948 which gave the manufacturer an easier way to produce a variety of lures. People still collect even the older, plastic versions. I love the wooden ones, however, and unlike true collectors, I like them to have the character that only comes with fighting many battles with feisty game fish.

This lure is the Wooden Swimmer from the 1940’s, and I believe the color is called Whiting Gold.

The very first batch of lures didn’t even have boxes; they were sold wrapped in newspaper!

Dedicated to a true entrepreneur, Bob Pond, who loved his sport.

Here is an excellent pdf file write up on the Atom Lures. Give it a little time to load. It comes From Hunting and Fishing Collectibles Magazine.
