Artist's Description

This is a scene from Woods Hole, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA. The beach roes are wild and grow everywhere you look as long as there is sand, salt spray, tough winds. They thrive in harsh seaside conditions and reward us with a delicate and delicious perfume that fills the air. I am always grateful for a walk among the roses, and I took this picture June 6, 2013!

The formal name for beach roses is Rosa rugosa. Here is information quoted from the site listed below:

“Alternate common name: Sea Rose, Salt-spray Rose.
Appearance: Dark green bushes from 3 to 6 feet tall. Blooms range in color from white to pink to red; very fragrant when blooming.
Habitat: Coastal sand dunes, salt marshes, rocky shores, and roadsides.
Seasonal appearance: Blooms May to September.”

Stone jetties are everywhere; it’s an effort to tame the currents and keep sand on the beaches.
