Artist's Description

“Autumn…the year’s last, loveliest smile.”

William Cullen Bryant
(1794 –1878 American romantic poet, journalist, and long-time editor of the New York Evening Post)

Late on an autumnal evening as the waters pass through the old bridge in Avonwick, South Devon. Seen here from the tree lined riverbank on the edge of the ancient ‘green lane’ known as ‘Avon Cobbly Walk’, looking northwest.

The River Avon, also known as the River Aune, rises in the southern half of Dartmoor National Park in an area of bog to the west of Ryder’s Hill. Close to where the river leaves Dartmoor a dam was built in 1957 to form the Avon reservoir.

After leaving the moor it passes through South Brent and then Avonwick towards Aveton Gifford and flows into the English Channel at Bigbury on Sea.

The name Avon comes from the Old Brythonic (proto-Celtic) term ‘abona’ which means river.
