Artist's Description

Beltane 70×100 oil on canvas, silver & golden leaf

The central character of the painting is my six-legged Faery Queen. The painting is about the ancient pagan holiday – Beltane, which is on the 1st of May. For the pagans that was the time of love and celebration, when everything in nature woke up for summer and mating. At this time fires were traditionally burned, fire being the symbol of male energy, and the maidens jumped over fire in many cultures. Celts believed that at this time, the Faery Folk who lived underground in Faery mounds (which you can see on the right) came out at this time and traveled to change residence.
