Artist's Description

This is a photograph which I took in Arras, France, the final resting place of my Uncle, John Gilmore Magee. He had lied about his age to join the Highland Light Infantry and was killed on the 22nd March 1918 at 19 years of age when an enemy plane fired into the trenches.

I have placed his image on the wall which bears his name as he has no marked grave because this cemetery was taken by the enemy the day following his burial so I think it must have been lost. Below is the original letter dated May 1918 which my Grandmother received advising her of his demise.

Dedicated to my Uncle, John Gilmore Magee 1899 – 1918
