Artist's Description

I’ve decided that she’s a female heron because her patience outlasted me. I spent 30 – 45 minutes with her, the last 20 minutes or so waiting and hoping to catch her with her [big] mouth open. Our temperature here was only 2 degrees above freezing and it started to rain a bit, so my hand holding the shutter button halfway down was getting cold. Eventually, with my legs becoming locked and pained in the crouch position behind my tripod, I had to give up on the open-mouth shot… I slowly retreated from the close position she had allowed me to get to, and walked like an ape for a few minutes till my joints would work properly again. Despite having a beak for a mouth, I think I saw a smirk as I left.
I WILL get another day, however, because… like… how long can she keep her big mouth closed?
