Alone on a Summer Night

The dishes are dirty. There are weeds to be yanked.
There are gifty people overdue to be thanked.
Over in the hamper, the laundry is piling.
My skin is dry and my nails need filing.
There’s junk mail for tossing and bills to be paid;
In the corner, a spider requires Raid.
The shelves are demanding a dusting done,
And long is the list of errands to be run.

There are dozens of projects I should be doing,
But this is my evening reserved for stewing.
Sitting quiet in shadows, melancholy;
Alone and old and un-anna, Polly.
Lost and weary in an after-dinner stupor,
Tonight I am being my own party pooper.
And, though feeling grumpy and sluggish,
Wanting someone to come by feeling huggish.
