Artist's Description

The Industrial Revolution created a huge effort upon the American people. Things changed rapidly and new demands were placed on refining our natural resources. The demand for iron and steel increased a hundred fold as our cities grew and expanded outward and upward and new oppertunities were created.
Here in Northwest Connecticut iron ore processing boomed with the completion of rail service from the ore producing regions of the Midwest to New York City, Boston and Albany, NY. The Beckley Iron Company grew from a small “Smitty” outfit making horseshoes and hinges to a 1 1/2 square mile ore processing plant. Huge amounts of hardwoods, and water, were needed to fire the furnaces, and there was plenty of that in the hills and mountains of the Berkshires here in Northwest CT.

Pictured is only one of the many furnaces and structures left standing on the site. It is constructed of Limestone that was quarried on location and that "open pit " mine is still operated today by the Phisher Pharmacutical Corp.

So, each trip I take to Long Island, NY I look at the NYC skyline from the Whitestone Bridge and see the results…. hundreds of skyscrapers and high rises ride the horizon as far as the eye can see.
