This Coyote's not Dead

Long ago, my husband Robert’s dad, called him and asked him if he wanted to go to work with him in an underground mine in Idaho. Robert said, “Yes”, so his dad came to Polson, MT to pick Robert up to take him to Idaho.

Robert’s dad was driving an old Buick, the tie rod ends were held together with wire. Sometimes, along the trip, the joint would drop out and they’d have to stop and wire things back together again.

Along the way, they noticed a dead coyote on the road. Robert’s dad had to stop and pick it up as pelts were in their prime at that time of year. Robert’s dad said he knew a guy at a bar who would buy the coyote from them. They threw the coyote in the trunk and away they went.

When they arrived at the bar, Robert’s dad carried the coyote in, the guy paid him for it, and put the coyote in a cooler in the back room. After a while the bartender needed to open the cooler door. When he had the door open, the coyote came boiling out! He wasn’t dead after all and he was on the fight. He raised havoc in the bar on his way to the front door. As luck would have it, the bartender had propped the front door open and the coyote found his way out.

The bartender was mad. He jumped Robert’s dad for selling him a coyote pelt while the coyote was still alive!

Robert’s dad never got ruffled by anything and he always had an answer. He told the bartender, “You had just as much time to decide he was alive as we did when we brought him in here”, and he kept the cash.

The moral of the story is, if you’re gonna buy a pelt, make sure it’s off the critter!
