I spotted this rather dilapidated beach hut, on a beach in Portugal. What struck me most was the name: “Venceremos”, which is Spanish for “We shall overcome” or “We will be victorious”. It was a phrase used a lot by Che Guevara during the Cuban revolution, although the original “Patria o Muerte! Venceremos” is actually attributed to Fidel Castro.
In any case, politics aside, I thought that the defiance and optimism of the name, given the sorry state of the hut was absolutely brilliant!
I had forgotten the shot, until recently, when I heard the song “Uprising” by Muse, which also uses the phrase “We will be victorious”, so I fished it out…,
