Artist's Description

When the water’s frozen
When the leaves turn black
When the days are broken
And your voice is back

When the kiss remembered
Is a hollow kiss
When the future ended
It was not like this

Just cold,
So cold

You turn your back on
Those you love
And leave the road

And end up silent
At Winter’s Pass
Giving up to highlands
Or waters vast

And when skies fall white
When we all disappear
When I can’t see for sight
I will still know you’re near

For without print of foot
Or walkways to fill
You’ll be my whispered wind
I’ll be your bitter chill

With the leaves on the trees long gone and the snow starting to fall, I’m back to black & white long exposure photography. With limited colour and minimal daylight I think winter is the best time of year for this type of photography, though on the downside it’s harder to get around and even when you do it’s always freezing.

This image is of Loch Earn in Perthshire, from the St. Fillans side. A lot of photographers these days have a particular fascination with piers & jetties, it’s become so common as to almost be a cliche. For the sake of variety I try not to shoot these too often, and when I do, I at least attempt to make it recognisably one of mine. Having said that, the reason these jetty shots are so popular is maybe because it’s one of the best ways to get a sense of distance into the image. And if you can get the water extremely smooth as well then the pier stands out more, and frankly just looks quite cool…
