Artist's Description

The original is a hand-built ceramic 50" tall wall bas relief called “Guarding the Sense Doors.” It refers to a practiced observation of guarding one’s senses during meditation, as distractions and wandering mind arise, while yielding to an ever-changing moment.

Each sensory pathway has a corresponding element similar to the ayurvedic healing system. As the lotus image depicts growth from dense earthen roots and muddy waters to lighter elements of fire, air, ether, and thought, the paperclay lotus blossom symbolizes the presence of ‘allowing’ — to be with what is, just as it is. For me, art making in clay unfolded into an exploration of that which animates the human spirit.
