A stranger’s mark

today I saw a footprint on the beach
fresh,
on display
a moment in time, alive in the sand,

impression of another who
lived and breathed today
on this spot

were they happy, exhilarated, lonely or sad
do they realise how significant they are
in all that is

or appreciate the mark they leave
or are they conditioned to
believe they are
only ordinary

their mark
a moment in time, waiting,
unblemished,
soon to be taken
by the incoming tide

but never wiped from my mind
