goodbye iAN

iAN Derrick, after a good 80 years on planet Earth, passed away this morning at Tweed hospital. iAN (his spelling) made lots of friends here on the Bubble through his entertaining short stories and comments. Here he is modelling his prized Red Army hat …

kneejerk reaction

The new look RedBubble has resulted in a few unhappy campers. I’m going to wait a few days until I get used to it before I pass judgement, although my gut feeling is that the RB team have put lots of thought into the changes and it will prove to be an improvement. I found this helpful FAQ for anyone totally lost.

he's on a horse!

I enjoyed Paul’s video

Am looking forward to settling into the new-look RedBubble. It feels like I’ve upgraded to a better car and some of the controls are in different places, so it’s going to be a bit frustrating for a short time, but I have confidence in the RB engineers and designers.

Trick or Treat nominated for SoJie 8

trick or treat

Join me at the Juried Invitational Exhibition…

I am very excited to have my art selected, from over 49000 works of art, to exhibit in SoJie 8. SoJie 8 takes its name from the Solo Exhibition group’s Juried Invitational Exhibition. This month is only the 8th one, ever, and 100 other artists, besides myself, are represented.…

Winners of the invitational will be announced on October 27th, when a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded in three categories: digital art, photography, and traditional art.

Non members, as well as members, ARE welcome to view all of the work nominated. So I hope that you will click the show banner, above, and follow the link to view my fellow exhibitors. The works are shown “gallery size” and are beautiful, seen together.

I took this photo in June 2009 at Coolangatta’s Wintersun Festival …

I’d photoshopped some people out of the shot, but the couple in the background suited the image so I left them in. I had no idea who they were. This year I included the pic in a book of my car images. My sister-in-law bought two copies of the book, one for her husband, and one for the husband’s workmate. The workmate recognised the couple in the photo, who were his friends and who live in Brisbane. They tracked me down via Google to my Fotoblur account, and have since bought their own copy of the book.

I like this book ...

… every page seems to have at least 3 or 4 good, original ideas, and the text gives credit to magazines like The Face, the artists who took advantage of photocopiers, the earlier adopters who worked with the very first (feeble) Macs to create art, people who mix traditional illustration with digital. The book is obviously put together by someone who loves illustration and originality.

the SoJie6 web ring

Thanks to Frannie and the Solo Exhibition group for inviting me to be on the jury for SoJie6 , Solo Exhibition’s Juried Invitational Exhibition. It was a privilege to view all the fantastic entries from some of RedBubble’s most talented, and to give Excellence in Digital Art awards to some of the stand-out images.

THIS JOURNAL IS ALSO PART OF A WEB RING. You can follow the artists involved by clicking on the WEB RING BADGE below. You don’t need to be a member of Solo Exhibition to show your support. This web ring is especially for non members! Thank you!

Gold Coast Show

I entered four photos into the Gold Coast Show this year and was very pleased to get a Highly Recommended (for the greyscale Buick) and a Second Prize in the main competition (for the red car). Also sold a print of the frog/lizard critter. Then to top it off I’ve just found out that I got the People’s Choice Award in the photography section … but I’ve got no idea which of the four entries won it!

the 66 phoenix has arrived!

It’s always a nice buzz to see your work in print. A copy of Diana-Lee Saville’s Love is a ’66 Phoenix arrived in my mailbox this afternoon, and Lulu have done an excellent job. The colours on the cover are just as I’d hoped (forgive the lighting in this photo … my camera struggled with the different lighting temperatures of the desklamp and the LCD).

first photo sale at Coffee on Mawson

One of my photos on the walls of Coffee on Mawson just got sold. (The photo was printed and framed by RedBubble). The shop opened on Tuesday this week. If anyone’s in the area (Stafford, Brisbane, Australia) the shop opens 6:30am Monday to Friday (all day) and 7:30am Saturday (half day). Bron makes great coffee!

Here’s the photo that sold …

small exhibition ... new coffee shop

My sister-in-law, Bronwen, opened her coffee shop for the first time today (April 6th). If you live or work in the Stafford area in Brisbane, drop in and say hello (85 Mawson Street). I know for a fact that she makes a very nice flat white. Bronwen was kind enough to let me put up a small exhibition of framed photos.

this elephant should have a RedBubble account

Someone emailed me a direct link to the video and I’ll admit to being dubious at first. (There are some clever computerised faked videos doing the viral rounds, and the close-up of the trunk at times looked like a human arm in a baggy sleeve.) Looked it up on Scopes and now I’m a believer.

Cute Eddie tee sale

Sales have been pretty quiet since, Christmas, so it was a nice surprise to get a sales notification from RedBubble for this t-shirt today. Thanks mystery buyer!
