Perdition

I dream of a whirling tornado of fire.

Not the way one dreams
of a lover’s hands
smooth on the skin.

Different, just as vivid
this dream is of fear,
flame
spinning towards me.

Chasing me.

Bent on my destruction
I know it will follow me.
It means to have me.
The angry red flames
swirling
wildly,
engulfing everything.

I can feel its scorching heat
licking my skin,
feel the tremble of the earth
as the flame feeds itself.

I fear the flame
more than the earth.
The earth,
that will one day cover me.

I fear the flame.

I know that it is coming.
